Deck Defects

Decks are often constructed by a homeowner or handyman, and very frequently the work is not done to current standards. Deck defects, especially on taller decks, can be very dangerous if not corrected. Poorly constructed decks exposed to the elements year round will only worsen and become more precarious over time. It is common for decks to have many design flaws.

Common Deck Flaws

  • Missing or poorly secured ledger

  • Missing ledger flashing

  • Missing joist hangers

  • Improper/missing fasteners in hangers

  • Rot in framing and decking

  • Inadequate support below beams/joists
